Regulations 426, 427 & 428 Reference - Occupational Health & Safety Regulations 2007 (Part 430 & Asbestos Regulations 2003)

Australia has one of the highest rates of asbestos related illness in the world. Unless property owners start taking warnings seriously, numbers will continue to rise and penalties may be severe.

Asbestos, which is now a banned product, was commonly used in over 3000 products between the 1940s and late 1980s. It can still be found under floor coverings, ceilings, eaves, around hot water pipes and air conditioning units to name a few. All types of asbestos can be damaging to health.

MES inspectors are trained in the identification of asbestos and how to officially test a building for material. It isn't as easy as just looking at the material with the naked eye to see if it contains asbestos. The presence of asbestos in a material can only be confirmed by laboratory testing. Australian Standard AS 4964, method for the qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk sample is the applicable standard for asbestos testing.
